Free online course from MITx offers educators the chance to embark on a design process to reflect on the purpose of high school.

With the whirlwind changes in technology, the job market of the future will look far different than it does today. Innovation, customization, globalization, and automation are reshaping the American workplace. More jobs will require tech skills, but critical thinking, creativity, and flexibility will also be key for young people to thrive in the 21st century.

Prepping for a Rapidly-Evolving Workplace

High schools can play a crucial role in preparing the next generation for a rapidly-evolving workplace. According to XQ’s Learner Goals, students will need to be original thinkers, generous collaborators, holders of foundational knowledge, masters of fundamental literacies, and lifelong learners in order to be fully prepared for all the future has to offer.

A free upcoming online course will explore this topic and more. “Envisioning the Graduate of the Future,” developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Teaching Systems Lab with support from the XQ Institute, will delve into the purpose and goals of high school, as well as the skills, knowledge, and capabilities that graduates will need in the future. The course begins May 2.

The Creation of a “Graduate Profile”

The four-week course will focus on creating a “graduate profile,” a vision of what young people will need to thrive in a complex, ever-changing world. Participants will have a chance to reflect on the unique needs of their own schools and communities, learn how to include and communicate with other stakeholders, and how to use a graduate profile to guide continuous school improvement. Participants will hear from Justin Reich, assistant professor of comparative media studies; others at MIT; and educators from featured schools including XQ School Washington Leadership Academy.
